ICELAND: JOURNEY INTO THE WILD LAND

An outdoor adventure through the land of ice and fire

Photoreportage by Helge Frericksen

On the road in Iceland

Driving through Iceland means experiencing the essence of northern nature. This island in the North Atlantic Ocean is characterized by spectacular landscapes : volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, glaciers and fjords. Kilometers of deserted roads wind through fields of black lava , snow-capped mountains and rushing rivers. At times the wind blows so hard that even in the car you feel vulnerable, while the landscape changes with every bend.

A living and wild land

The waterfalls in the hinterland fall from impressive heights, carving out deep canyons. Continuing on foot without going too far, the ground becomes unstable: cracks open in the ground and jets of boiling water suddenly erupt. Here the earth is alive, and every step reminds us of how fragile the balance on which we walk is.

On the coast, the landscape changes. The sea crashes onto dark sandy beaches, while rocky cliffs rise like natural walls. The wind whistles through the rocks, and looking out to sea it seems clear that you are at the extreme limits of the Earth. The atmosphere is wild and fascinating, capable of capturing you in the most remote part of your being.

Between the sea and the hinterland

After days of traveling, we reach a small port . Here, the sun finally breaks through the clouds, illuminating the boats moored along the wooden piers. Fishermen unload crates full of fish, while seagulls swoop in search of scraps. The smell of saltiness mixes with that of the fishing boats' fuel. We stop at a restaurant overlooking the water, tasting a hot dish while observing the activity of the port. It's a moment of pause before setting off again towards even more remote lands.

A unique journey to the far north

The fauna we encounter in these immense territories seems not to notice our presence. Flocks of seabirds fly over the cliffs, swooping down into the waves. On the beach, some seals rest placidly on the dark sand, watching us with curious eyes before diving into the icy waters. In the vast plains we cross by car it is not difficult to see signs warning of the passage of reindeer , they move in small herds and we are lucky enough to meet them. Sometimes we come across scattered groups of horses with thick fur that graze undisturbed, accustomed to the wind and the cold.

At night, the sky lights up with moving lights. The Northern Lights dance above us , closing our journey with a unique show. Here you can feel the power of the elements in their ancient strength and crossing this island in the Ocean means measuring yourself with the greatness and power of our Planet .
